As your baby gets older you'll learn how to deal with minor ailments, but there are times when you'll need the doctor for your baby.

Sometimes when your baby is ill you'll be torn between not wanting to bother the doctor unnecessarily and feeling more and more worried about your baby's wellbeing. Don't take any chances with your baby's health - call the doctor promptly, especially if your baby is showing one or more of the symptoms listed or if you have any other reason to worry.

Call your doctor if your baby:

  • is having convulsions
  • is hard to rouse
  • is having trouble breathing, is wheezing, or has a loud, dry cough
  • has a very high temperature, or an abnormally low one
  • has stools that are frequent, loose, green, and watery
  • is vomiting a significant amount (not just the usual after-feed possetting)
  • has refused several of his feeds in a row
  • is listless and crying for no apparent reason
  • seems to be bothered by his ears, head, or neck
  • has an unusual rash.
