Abdullah

Definition

In Arabic abd means "male servant" and is used in combination with names for Allah to form names. Abdul or Abdel "servant of" is used as a short form of these names. Abdullah, also spelt Abdallah, Abdoullah or Abd-Allah, means "servant of Allah". This was the name of both the father of the Prophet Mohammed and of one of his sons. Other names formed in the same way are Abdul Aziz, "servant of the Almighty"; Abdul Qadir (Abdelkader); "servant of the Powerful"; Abdul Latif (Abdellatif) "servant of the All-Gentle". The use of prefixes that mean "servant, devotee" is by no means restricted to Arabic names: compare, for example Malcolm.
