Baldwin
Definition
Baldwin is a compound of bald "bold" and wine "friend", while Baldric combines bald with ric "power, rule". In the French form, Baudouin, Baldwin was a staple name in Flemish ruling families in the Middle Ages, including the leader of the first Crusade in the twelfth century, who was eventually crowned King of Jerusalem. It reappeared in the region in Baudouin I, King of the Belgians (1930–1993). Baldric has never been as popular as Baldwin, but has achieved immortality in the character of the hopeless servant in the Blackadder television comedy series, the first series of which was first shown in 1983.
