Dahlia
Definition
Another flower name, Dahlia comes from the name of the Swedish botanist Anders Dahl (1751–1789) who brought the Mexican wild flower to Europe for cultivation. It seems to have had more popularity with authors – it is used by George Meredith in Rhoda Fleming (1865), and by P.G. Wodehouse for Bertie Wooster's favourite aunt – than with parents. Dalia, a form also found in France, is not uncommon in the USA, where it is sometimes used as a feminine form of Dale.
