Like Cheyenne, this is another Native American nation, a branch of the Sioux, whose name means "friend". It is used as a first name for both sexes. Although it did not start to be used regularly until the 1980s for boys and 90s for girls it was used on an occasional basis earlier than this; as in the case of the jazz and blues singer Dakota Staton (1930–2007). Other nations have been used as names, for instance Cherokee, but Dakota and Cheyenne are the two most popular. Dakota Fanning is a well-known child actress.
