Definition
Gaël is a commune in Brittany, and has been well-used by Bretons as a first name since at least the 1960s, and has since spread to the rest of France, losing its Breton associations in the process. The district name may be derived from the second half of the name of St Judicaël, who died at monastery there. Judicaël, which means "generous leader", is also found as a first name in France. Gael is also the name of an ethno-linguistic group found in Scotland and Ireland, and sometimes used as a synonym for Celt, and some users may use the name with this meaning. The French have a feminine form Gaëlle. The name has been brought to the attention of a much wider audience through the success of the Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal
