Idonea
Definition
This unusual name is associated with the north of England. It has been suggested that it comes from a Latin adjective meaning "fit, suitable", but, since the name is not used in countries where the language is descended from Latin, this seems unlikely. A much more attractive idea is that it is a form of the name of the Norse goddess Iduna, the guardian of the Apples of Youth, the eating of which kept the gods young. When she was abducted by the giants, the gods experienced the effects of age for the first time, although their youth was restored when they won her and the apples back. It also appears in the form Idony, and the rare name Idina may come from it or be a form of Ida.
