Idris
Definition
There are two entirely different masculine names here. The first is an Arabic name, the second Welsh. The Arabic Idris or Idriss comes from the verb darasa "to study, learn", and is the Muslim name for the prophet who has the biblical name Enoch. Idrak "intellect, perception" would be a feminine near equivalent. The Welsh name also has a long history. Meaning "ardent or impulsive lord", it was held by Idris the Giant, who was killed in 632. He has entered Welsh legend as an astronomer and magician, and one of the highest mountains in Wales, Cader Idris ("Idris's Chair"), was supposed to have been his observatory. From the same root comes Idwal (a combination of words meaning "lord" and "rampart"), probably signifying "defender", another ancient name held by two tenth-century kings of Gwynedd.
