Mabel

Definition

This name started life in the Middle Ages as a pet form of Amabel, meaning "loveable" (see Amy), but has all but replaced its original. In its turn it developed into such forms as Maybelle and Maybelline, although these can also be thought of as developments of May; in turn, May, along with Mab and Mabs, is sometimes a pet form of Mabel. There is a Welsh form, Mabli, and Mabel can also be spelt Mable. At the start of the twentieth century Mabel had a brief spell as a boy's name.
