Macy has been recorded as a girl's name since the nineteenth century, but only came into regular use, in the USA, in the 1990s. It sometimes in the form Maci(e) or Macey. Although chiefly associated with the department store, it is a surname that comes from a French place name originally meaning "Maccius" estate". Its rise most probably owes something to the popularity of Mason as a boy's name. The singer Macy Gray has given the name publicity.
