Madison
Definition
As a surname Madison can either mean "Matthew's son" or "Maud's son". It came into popular use as a girl's name in the USA after the 1984 film Splash in which the mermaid heroine adopted it as her name after seeing a sign for Madison Avenue in New York. It had previously been used for boys often with reference to the surname of the fourth president of the USA. It is currently very popular for girls in the USA (sometimes as Madyson or Maddison), in Canada and Australia and is well used in England and Scotland.
