Nahum
Definition
A prophet in the Old Testament, Nahum wrote in the seventh century bc. As well as the usual oracles about the rewards of respecting God, and the vengeance that awaits those who do not, his book gives a vivid description of the fall of Nineveh. The name means "full of comfort", and is probably a short form of a name describing God as comforter. It is rarely used, but an awareness of it is kept alive by the hymn writer Nahum Tate.
