Quentin

Definition

Quentin comes from the Latin name Quintus ("fifth"), traditionally given to a fifth son. St Quentin was a third-century missionary and martyr who met his death at the French city now named after him. There is a similar surname, Quinton, which comes from a place name meaning "queen's settlement". Other forms used are Quintin and Quinten. The martyr is the main source of the name, which was used in the Middle Ages in England, fell out of use thereafter and was revived after the publishing of Sir Walter Scott's Quentin Durwood in 1823. The director Quentin Tarantino is a well-known holder.
