Tacey
Definition
Tace or Tacey was a name coined by the Puritans from the Latin meaning "be silent", as a reminder to women that the New Testament says that they should be silent in church (and no doubt hoping for silence elsewhere). It was sometimes used in its English translation – for instance, Conwy parish church has a seventeenth-century plaque commemorating a Silence Jones. Despite a meaning that might be expected to be too sexist for modern use, the name is still regularly encountered.
