Ulric
Definition
This name appears in Old English as Wulfric ("wolf" combined with "power"), which was the name of an English saint of the twelfth century who had been a self-indulgent parson in his younger days, devoted to hunting, but who reformed in later years, to end his days a recluse in the delightfully named Haselbury Plucknett in Somerset. It is also the name of a number of German saints, and modern use of Ulric is probably due to its introduction from Germany. This is certainly the case for Ulrice, the German feminine form, also found as Ulrica or Ulrika, all forms being pronounced the same way. Ulrica seems to have been a popular literary name in the nineteenth century, appearing, among others, as characters in two of Sir Walter Scott's books, Ivanhoe (1819) and Count Robert of Paris (1831).
