Ulysses
Definition
This is the Latin form of Odysseus, Homer's great Greek hero, famous for his wisdom, cunning and eloquence and the faithfulness of his wife Penelope. It is little used in modern times, but when it occurs it is probably through an association with General Ulysses S. Grant (1822–1885), commander of the Union armies in the American Civil War and 18th president of the United States. In Ireland Ulick (see Hugh, William) is sometimes anglicised as Ulysses. The name is sometimes spelt Ulises in the USA.
