Uma
Definition
Made famous by the actress Uma Thurman, whose father is a noted Buddhist scholar, Uma is one of the names of the Indian goddess Parvati and comes from the Sanskrit word for "flax". English speakers had been exposed to the name earlier, for it is used by R.L. Stevenson for a character in his spooky novella The Beach of Falesa (1893).
