Wallace
Definition
The use of this as a surname probably arose from admiration of Sir William Wallace (c. 1274–1305) of Braveheart fame, the great Scottish patriot who fought against the English under Edward I and temporarily drove them out of his country, until he was captured and executed by them. In contemporary accounts his name is spelt Walays, or in Latin Wallensis, which means "the Welshman". It comes from the word waleis, which originally meant "foreign" but came to be given to all the Celtic minorities in the British Isles, including those living in the Scottish border area from whom Wallace is thought to have been descended.
