Walter is another of the Germanic names brought to England by the Norman Conquest. It is made up of elements wald and hari meaning "rule" and "army". In the past, the pet forms were Wat and Watty, reflecting the old pronunciation which swallowed the "l"; but now Wally and Walt are used.
