Wanda
Definition
It has been said that Wanda is a form of "Wend", an ancient tribe who inhabited Europe in the Dark Ages; but this is not well supported. It is a Slavic name, found in Polish folklore, but seems to have reached English speakers only when Ouida published a novel called Wanda in 1883. The variant Vanda reflects the German pronunciation of the name, and has the variant Vonda.
