Xavier
Definition
St Francis Xavier (1506–1552), the patron saint of missionaries, got his name from the Spanish-Basque village where he was born. He was one of the founding members of the Jesuits and devoted his life to spreading Christianity in the Far East, particularly in India, China and Japan. He is buried in Goa (India), where his tomb is still a popular place of pilgrimage. Xavier is most often found as a second name, often following Francis. In Spain it is spelt Javier. It is occasionally spelt Zavier, and the X-men comics and films have introduced the spelling Xzavier. There are feminine forms Xaviera or Javiera, Xavia or Zavia, Xaverine and Xavière.
