Yair
Definition
Yair is a Hebrew name meaning "he shines" most often found in Spanish as Jairo. However, Yair is also found among Spanish-speakers, and Yahir, the name of a popular Mexican singer and actor is probably a variant. Yahaira looks like a feminine form, but is claimed by some to be a name from the Native American Taino language. It was popularised in the 1970s by the telenovella Esmeralda. Names beginning with Y are currently popular in Latin America and many of them are difficult to trace historically. Many have been linked to Arabic names, via the large-scale immigration to Latin America by Arabic speakers, particularly the Lebanese, but at the moment there has not been enough work done on the history of these names to say anything authoritatively about them. Names in this group include Yareli, Yaritza, and Yuridia. The latter has been given a high profile by the Mexican singer and actress Yuridia Gaxiola as well as by another Mexican singer and actress known simply as Yuri, whose full first name is Yuridia.
