Zachary
Definition
The English form of the Hebrew name Zachariah (Zacharias is the Greek), Zachary means "God has remembered". It is probably the most used of the masculine "Z" names, particularly in its short form Zac (see also Isaac). Zach, Zack, Zacky and Zaz have also been recorded as short forms. The name is attached to eight different people in the Bible, the most prominent of whom was the father of John the Baptist, who was punished with dumbness when he did not believe what the Angel Gabriel told him of his future son, and on the restoration of his voice was inspired to compose the hymn of praise known as the "Benedictus". Zachary is currently popular in the USA, sometimes with an "e" instead of the second a or with a "ck" rather than "ch", and it is used regularly in the UK
