Baby's first trimester

Even though you are probably not physically aware of it, your baby's first trimester is one of fast and furious development when it will grow from a tiny fertilized egg into 9cm fetus (recognizable as a human being) with a beating heart, a head, arms and legs and whom you could now either call 'he or she', if you could see their tiny private parts clearly!

  • First six weeks

    First six weeks

    Your fertilized egg becomes a ball of cells (known as a blastocyst), which floats into your uterus and implants itself in the lining. The basis for your baby's future development is now laid down.

  • Up to ten weeks

    Up to ten weeks

    This is a time of very rapid and crucial development - your baby quadruples in size. The embryo is lying in the centre of a large placental cocoon and is still very tiny. As the embryo develops, its cells are constantly changing to make new structures.

    Up to 14 weeks

    By 14 weeks after your last period, all of your baby's major organs have formed and his intestines are sealed in his abdominal cavity. He's starting to grow and mature.
