Dad as carer

In many households, dad is the main helper when his partner arrives home with their new baby. Some men immediately involve themselves in caring for their partner and child, but others need to be encouraged.

What you need from your partner more than anything else at this time is understanding, sympathy, and a readiness to go along with you and the baby. It's best to have a serious discussion about this before your baby is born.

You may find it best to divide the work between you. For instance, your partner could take over the cleaning, shopping, and laundry, leaving you free to concentrate on looking after yourself and the baby. Or you might prefer to share all the household and child care work.

If you're breastfeeding, express milk into a bottle so that your partner can enjoy feeding the baby.
