Your baby's clothes
Most of us over-prepare for a new baby, especially if it's our first. Don't forget babies grow extremely fast, and tiny garments will soon be outgrown. On the whole, it's better to buy bigger, rather than smaller, as clothes that are too close-fitting may make your baby hot and rub her skin. The golden rule is to keep all clothing simple and comfortable, causing fewer problems for both of you.

Baby clothes are getting better all the time in terms of fabric, design, and washability, so get a feel for what's available before you make a final choice. You'll see lots of things you don't need and would never use, so don't waste your money on unnecessary items. Ask a friend with a baby what she found useful - perhaps she can pass on some clothes to you.
You'll need several changes of sheets, stretchsuits, vests, and shawls so that you can have a few in the wash without running out. Choose patterned sheets and clothing, rather than solid pastels so that every little stain doesn't show. Natural fibres are best as they allow sweat to evaporate. Choose vests with wide necks, as babies hate having tight things pulled over their heads. Don't buy any clothing with buttons or zippers that are close to the neck. Also, think about what's convenient for you. Even if you prefer terry nappies, keep a supply of disposable nappies on hand for times when you need to make a quick change.
Essential baby items
- 1 hat - the type will depend on the season
- 6 cotton vests with wide or envelope neck
- 2 plain cardigans, jackets, or loose jumpers
- 2 pairs cotton socks or slip-on fabric bootees
- 2 shawls
- 6 stretch suits
- gloves or scratch mittens
- 2 soft new towels
- 1 packet cotton wool
- baby lotion
- blunt-edged scissors
- nappy rash cream
- 1 box newborn-size disposable nappies or 2 dozen reusable nappies and liners (or packs of disposable liners)
If using reusables you'll also need:
- 2 nappy buckets
- 6 pairs plastic pants and 12 safe nappy pins or plastic snap fasteners
Shopping tips
- Don't try to get everything all in one go, and ask your partner or a friend to help you carry any heavy shopping bags.
- Your baby doesn't care what colour and style her clothes are, so choose garments that are easily machine washed in colours that won't run.
- Don't buy too many clothes for the first months in advance as you don't know how fast your baby's going to grow or what the weather will be like. But don't skimp on the number of essential items. You always need more than you think.
- Choose medium-priced items from reliable stores. Cheap baby clothes often fall apart at the seams, the fabric becomes rough and irritating, and they may have to be thrown out after only a few washes.
Your baby's needs
- Look for soft, machine-washable fabrics. Cotton is ideal. Synthetic fabrics don't always absorb sweat, and wool can irritate the skin of some newborn babies.
- In warm weather two layers are usually ample. In winter add more layers, but do not wrap her up too much with tight clothes.
- A baby's gestures are jerky and expansive, so make sure garments are loose, and easily stretched.
