Piles during pregnancy are dilated rectal veins (see Varicose veins) that may protrude through the anus. They don't usually develop until the second trimester.
Your growing baby presses down on your rectum and can prevent blood flow to the heart. The blood therefore pools, causing the veins to dilate to accommodate the dammed-up blood.
Eat plenty of fibre to keep your bowels regular and your stools soft as this will help you avoid straining down. Don't lift weights, as this increases pressure in the abdominal area and in the rectal veins. Have coughs treated promptly for the same reasons. Aromatherapy may be able to relieve cough symptoms.
