Thrush is a yeast infection. Typically you'll have a thick, white, curdy discharge from your vagina, with dryness and intense itching around your vagina, vulva, perineum, and, sometimes, your anus. You may also have pain when passing urine. Thrush can happen at any time.
It's caused by an infection with the yeast Candida albicans, which is always in your bowel. Infection happens when the yeast grows uncontrolled by other bacteria, perhaps after a course of antibiotics. Thrush is more common in pregnancy, probably because increased vaginal blood flow can cause a leakage of sugar into body fluids. Excessive sugar intake often aggravates the condition.
Tight pants and trousers can encourage infection. Choose cotton instead of man-made fibres. The doctor will prescribe pessaries that you should place in your vagina at night, as directed. You'll also be prescribed a cream that you gently rub into the skin around your vaginal opening and anus, and on the thighs. This will stop the itching.
