Pregnancy: when you should call your doctor
Of course, you’ll go for your regular monthly visits, scans, blood tests etc. but some signs do merit a special call or visit to the doctor.

Not all of these symptoms are a definite sign of trouble, but it’s worth contacting your doctor to be sure that everything is okay.
Call/see your doctor/midwife if…
- You have an ongoing high temperature or have caught an infectious bug (gastro, flu, bad cold, skin rash, swollen throat…);
- You have vaginal bleeding (occasional spotting isn’t normally a cause for concern)
- You notice any important amount of unusual vaginal discharge;
- You experience any urinary problems (burning, abnormal leaks…);
- You experience frequent or very painful contractions;
- You can no longer feel your baby moving;
- You have a fall (particularly on your tummy);
- You faint or lose consciousness.
These are the “classic” things to look out for, but don’t hesitate to give your doctor or midwife a call if you’re worried about anything else. It’s better to have your mind at ease, especially during a first pregnancy when it’s all brand new and can be a little daunting.
